What is the 30under30?
30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians.
Each year, we invite our readers to nominate young Australian entrepreneurs deserving of recognition for their outstanding entrepreneurial endeavours. More.
Chantelle Baxter, VIC (b. 1984)
Name: Chantelle Baxter
Age: 29 (born December 1984)
Gender: Female
State: VIC
Known for: One Girl
Chantelle Baxter’s One Girl is on a mission to educate a million girls across Africa by 2020.
The company inspires men and women to wear school dresses and raise money to send girls in Africa to school. Since launching in 2011, the company has raised over $1.1 million and this is on track to educate more than 6,000 women and girls.
“I started this business after travelling to Sierra Leone and learning it was one of the worse places on earth to be born a girl,” Chantelle recently told Anthill.
The company asks men and women to “Do It in a Dress” — a worldwide movement that has inspired 1,600 people to engage in fundraising activities in a school dress.
And the results are strengthening. In around three-and-a-half years, One Girl has gone from a completely volunteer organisation with less than $10,000 in funding and 100 girls in school to having raised $1.1 million via 14,000 unique donors. The company has five paid staffers. On average, One Girl has grown 178% per year for the last three years.
And there’s further entrepreneurial expansion in Chantelle’s future:
“This year we’re launching Freckle, a completely open source online fundraising system for peer to peer fundraisers. We needed a fundraising solution that didn’t exist in the market, Chantelle added.
“So we built one. I negotiated with a foundation to secure $35,000 in funding. I then negotiated with a developer to build the system with a $50,000 discount – I then negotiated with a design agency to with another $35,000 discount. We launch in August. It won’t just benefit us, but other charities too.”
One Girl is a charity making a difference in an area of great need, and it’s helping others make a difference in the world, too. That cements Chantelle Baxter amongst Anthill’s 2014 30under30 winners.
Anthill asks: Chantelle Baxter, what’s your super power?
It’s got to be some kind of inspiration super power. My role at One Girl is Chief Inspiration Officer – and I take it very seriously. I hustle and inspire and then hustle some more.
