What is 30under30?

30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. This year saw a surplus of highly qualified entrants, so we thought we would highlight some of the bright and innovative nominees who just missed the Top 30 by a wink. Behold, our 2012 30under30 Honourable Mentions! More.

Nick Wallberg, VIC (b. 1983)

Name: Nick Wallberg
Age: 29 (Born: April 1983)
Gender: Male
State: VIC
Known for: Tram Sessions Inc.

Nick Wallberg measures his business revenue not in dollars, but in smiles, claps and cheers.

That’s because the 29-year-old runs Tram Sessions, a not-for-profit with a simple, big-hearted mission: with so many music venues in Melbourne shuttering their doors, why not give the public more access to musicians?

As in, putting bands on public transport to play pop-up concerts. Impossible? Outlandish?

Not to this entrepreneur: Tram Sessions has become a regular on Melbourne’s trams, and over a hundred bands inside Victoria and out are on the wait list to perform.

The company even has the full backing of Yarra Trams to organise performances and film them for the pleasure of global audiences. (So if you were running late that one night and happened to miss Xavier Rudd…er, no biggie.)

To cap off 2012, Wallberg was recognised with a GENERATE award, jointly sponsored by the Australian recording industry and Federal Government.

A native Swede, Wallberg is still maneuvering the path toward full Australian citizenship (hang in there, mate), but in his favour, he can argue that his work captures the very essence of the Aussie creative spirit. Touch on, and enjoy the show.

Anthill asks: Nick Wallberg, what motivates you as an entrepreneur?

Making people happy through music. Whenever it’s tough I go back to the feeling of being on the tram when the bands start to play — surprised faces, smiles and local drunks taking on a back-up singer role (true story). It’s priceless!
