Before venturing into the removalist solutions industry, this 28-year-old entrepreneur was a professional breakdancer. At the age of 19, Zachary was running and promoting breakdancing and hip-hop events. He needed to make more money so he worked for a moving company, instantly realizing he could do things better on his own. So he borrowed $3k and brought in his own truck to use in the business. Within one year, that one truck became four. And at the moment, his company is Queensland’s largest permanent office moving solutions provider.
These days, Zachary’s attention is focused on building his Brisbane-based moving company, Your Local Movers, by applying the Japanese business principles of Kaizen. Part of his success, Zachary says, is “to simply always do what you believe is the right thing. We have secret ways of contacting and creating leads, but you have to drink the Kool-Aid to find them out.”
What made his company stand out is that they jumped on to the SEO and SEM tactics way before most of his competitors in the industry did. In fact, as early as 2008, he was already using Google ads over the more traditional Yellow pages, and these strategies helped propel his business’ growth. And in his quest for further learning, he fondly remembers waiting it out in front of Tom Potter’s office where he accosted the businessman behind the wildly successful Eagle Boys franchise just to ask the latter to become his mentor.
It hasn’t all been smooth sailing for Zachary, though. Back in 2011, he experienced a major setback when a flood and a fire happened within the space of 12 months, which cost him $1m. “We still kept the business going. We have grown and learned to adapt.”
