What is 30under30?
30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. This year saw a surplus of highly qualified entrants, so we thought we would highlight some of the bright and innovative nominees who just missed the Top 30 by a wink. Philip Sondhu spent his childhood on a farm and, as his career reveals, it’s hard to take the country out of the country boy.
Researching the online real estate market, Sondhu saw a void in the niche market of rural property.
FarmBuy.com, which he established in 2009, opens up that market to agricultural real estate, with ‘farm-specific’ search criteria related to land size, weather zones and crop productivity.
For Sondhu, the real challenge was retaining advertisement sponsors and core agents to avoid, as it were, buying the farm. He has met both challenges, keying into a banner ad agreement with Carsales.com and its subsidiary, Farmmachinerysales.com.au.
He also persuaded a national agency to stay on board after a sluggish trial run.
“Launching a startup, people can be very sceptical and cautious,” says Sondhu, who has taken the old-fashioned approach to fostering biz relationships. “Investing time to meet and form a relationship helps alleviate concerns and build trust.”
FarmBuy today is as busy as ever, with 400 offices listing and 15,000 properties online.
