What is 30under30?

30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. This year saw a surfeit of highly qualified entrants, so we thought we would highlight some of the bright and innovative nominees who just missed Top 30 by a wink. Behold, our 2012 30under30 Honourable Mentions! More.

Peter Moriarty, NSW (b. 1989)

Name: Peter Moriarty
Age: 22 (Born: November 1989)
Gender: Male
State: NSW
Known for: inGenius Australia

Kids who start businesses at the age of 14 generally use their neighborhoods or schools to attract a client base. Indeed, Peter Moriarty recalls going about rural Sydney on his push bike to reach friends and family — to offer them tech support.

Fast-forward to age 22, tech support is still in demand and Moriarty is now at it full-time with itGenius Australia, “the IT Department for companies that can’t afford their own IT Department,” as he puts it. itGenius manages thousands of servers, workstations and equipment Australia-wide. Moriarty has even gone offshore by adding a tech team in India and administrative support staff in the Philippines, even as the core team in Sydney remains at less than five.

Despite lacking formal business training, Moriarty says his love of computing, plus an upbringing in the country where strenuous field labour is the norm, have given him the strength to pull through. And his customers remain flabbergasted: “I think most clients think I’m about 30,” he says. Today, no push bike is fast enough to reach them all.

Anthill asks: Peter Moriarty, what motivates you as an entrepreneur?

I’d really love to buy Ferraris, Ducatis and other toys but my main aim in building wealth right now is to be financially free before I’m 30 so I can start a family in comfort and spend my life helping inspire and motivate other budding young entrepreneurs.
