What is 30under30?
30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. This year saw a surplus of highly qualified entrants, so we thought we would highlight some of the bright and innovative nominees who just missed the Top 30 by a wink. Melbourne’s gamers and gamifying entrepreneurs have a home in Geniaus, a collaborative work space and business incubator dubbed a ‘frathouse for innovation’.
Co-founder Hayden Bowler is celebrating the sale of a venue app to Luna Park, and is aiming to grow beyond the eastern suburbs to the CBD, inside RMIT’s new Swanston Business Academic Building.
Carrying the torch for Geniaus this year (his colleague, Cameron Rambert, did so in 2011), Bowler is also the co-founder of Trend Digital, a web specialist business that has its roots in high school.
Originally a wholesaler of sunglasses, he shifted focus after he caught the attention of customs agents for selling unregistered imports.
Certainly not the kind of publicity the majority of teens expect, yet Bowler enjoys the roller-coaster of entrepreneurship — and doing business with iconic amusement parks is just another part of the thrill.
Anthill asks: Hayden Bowler, what motivates you as an entrepreneur?
I find structure boring. I enjoy the challenge and even setbacks that business puts me through. The ambiguity and uncertainty of starting the year in a new venture keeps me driven and engaged.
