1. THE BEGINNING

This innovation initially came to life when…

On one of his regular medical retrieval missions, Dr Todd Fraser reflected on why his retrieval pilot was required to perform supervised procedures every 3 months and re-certification every 12 months, but the same was not expected of him. A practicing intensivist, Dr Fraser developed his ideas about procedural certification and eventually Osler was born. (Our name comes from Sir William Osler, who created the first residency program for specialty training of physicians, and was the first to bring students out of the lecture hall for bedside clinical training. He has been described as the “Father of Modern Medicine”.

2. WHAT & HOW

The purpose of this innovation is to…

Help doctors and nurses improve their clinical competency. Osler is a clinical report card for practitioners across all specialties and experience levels to record, measure and improve clinical performance, and improve patient safety.

It does this by…

Provide information on procedural competence that is coupled with interactive knowledge resources and adaptive learning, thereby creating a performance improvement cycle tailored to an individual’s capability and experience.

3. PURPOSE & BENEFITS

This innovation improves on what came before because…

While there are learning management systems, and simple procedural log books, and collaboration applications, none have pulled them together the way Osler has. Mobilising a set of data about a clinician’s skills and performance and providing visibility to her and her unit manager has never been possible in this way before.

Its various benefits to the customer/end-user include…

Osler reduces preventable patient harm that results in additional operational cost, litigation and human toll across health systems.

For a clinician, it enables them to be the best practitioner they can be.

In the past, this problem was solved by…

Nothing. Doctor validation (or re-validation) is a concept that is only starting to enter health systems. Medicine is the only high stakes industry (ie aviation, police, fire) that does not require its practitioners to regularly demonstrate their competence.

Its predecessors/competitors include…

Undertaking learning through other learning systems. Logging procedural activity through simple apps.
Tracking information on spreadsheets.

5. TARGET MARKET

It is made for…

Hospitals/Health Systems & Clinicians
Hospitals will use Osler across the medical and nursing staff in one or more units (acute care focussed initially), or across a cohort of junior doctors/nurses/trainee in different units across the hospital.

Clinicians, particularly junior ones, will use Osler to improve and track their skills and position themselves to stand above the rest when trying to secure key postings in speciality hospital units.

It is available for sale through…

On-line subscription

Our marketing strategy is to…

Direct sales into units or whole of hospital.

On-line/digital/social marketing to individual clinicians.
