1. THE BEGINNING
This innovation initially came to life when…
the founders of Eleos met while working for the Victorian Department of Primary Industries on the forerunner of the EMMA knowledge management platform. Numerous discussions, during long car trips across from one end of Victoria to the other, led to the development of a number of business ideas and opportunities – after exploring these for a number of years, the founders realised the commercial potential of the system they had developed and began to market it to government and enterprise customers in Australia and internationally.
2. WHAT & HOW
The purpose of this innovation is to…
1. reduce the significant cost of inefficient and ineffective organisational knowledge management 2. increase the value organisations get from their knowledge and data 3. provide access to better knowledge and data to help organisations make better decisions
It does this by…
combining a ‘universal translator’/‘discovery layer’ for IT systems, with a world first ‘context engine’ unleashing the full potential of organisational knowledge and resources. EMMA uses metadata to create connections between people, systems and data and then allows these connections to be identified and searched/browsed – it also makes this information available to external systems via APIs enabling rich reporting.
3. PURPOSE & BENEFITS
This innovation improves on what came before because…
EMMA provides a single point of entry to ALL of an organisation’s data/content, allowing seamless navigation and browsing across content stored in multiple, previously incompatible systems. Unlike other platforms on the market today, EMMA also understands complex relationships and context, delivering richer, more dynamic searching and browsing across all of an organisation’s records and content.
Its various benefits to the customer/end-user include…
– lower knowledge costs – a single point of entry into ALL of an organisation’s data/content – richer, more dynamic search and browsing – increased content targeting and customisation – greater content use and reuse – improved systems integration and flexibility – better protection of organisational knowledge
4. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
In the past, this problem was solved by…
Custom-built platforms/federated systems, which, while offering limited capacity for integration place significant restrictions on knowledge structures, require extensive data transformation and create rigidity and inflexibility in system design. EMMA avoids these complications while delivering significantly greater capability and functionality.
Its predecessors/competitors include…

5. TARGET MARKET
It is made for…
EMMA was developed with a range of organisations in mind, from large enterprises, government departments and research institutions with significant knowledge management challenges through to Small to Medium Enterprises looking to extract maximum value from their knowledge and data holdings. Our ideal customer has significant knowledge holdings, stored from and accessed by multiple systems, databases and in ‘the cloud’. They have more than 100 staff spread across offices state or nationwide/internationally. Eleos is currently marketing a fully customised version of the EMMA platform, although shrink-wrapped and ‘Knowledge Management As A Service’ versions for SMEs are either under development or planned.
It is available for sale through…
Currently, EMMA is only available for sale by contacting Eleos. We have commenced negotiations with a range of channel partners in order to sell the product down specialist channels (i.e. academic, research, healthcare/life sciences etc.)
Our marketing strategy is to…
focus on enterprise and government customers; leveraging our national and international networks and our initial deployment within the Victorian Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources. Selection as one of the Tech23 for 2015 has enabled us to build important networks within a range of State and Federal government departments, consultancies and international stakeholders.
