This innovation initially came to life when…

We started using Virtual Reality to find new ways to solve real-world problems and found it hard to move around virtual worlds without feeling sick or running into obstacles. We found movement in VR was a huge problem for this exciting emerging industry and was worth solving using our expertise as engineers. For VR to become a useful computing medium that may one day replace our laptops and phones, it needs to have its “mouse moment” like the PCs did in the 80s. So we developed our Alto as an entirely new genre and platform for moving around Virtual Reality.

2. WHAT & HOW

The purpose of this innovation is to…

…allow you an unprecedented experience of flying around virtual worlds without the side effects of motion sickness. Alto can be used for gaming and entertainment, moving around virtual architecture, virtual tourism, and playing social virtual sports with remote friends.

It does this by…

…tricking your brain into believing you are truly flying even though you are anchored in place. It reinforces this illusion because you move around by leaning and tilting the flexible Alto board under your standing body and it gives you vibration feedback that makes the experience feel even more real. This reduces the chance of you feeling motion sick.

3. PURPOSE & BENEFITS

This innovation improves on what came before because…

Unlike previous VR-motion-controllers, it is more accessible for the masses being highly intuitive, easy to use, cheap and easy to store under a couch. Also, Alto can connect with every type of VR technology including high-end systems such as the Oculus or low-end such as Google Cardboard (phone based VR).

The ability to provide an unlimited virtual world exploration experience without taking up space and its ability to allow remote users to have incredible shared experience together.

4. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

In the past, this problem was solved by…

Either making large expensive treadmills for VR that take up half the living room or letting users move around virtual worlds by teleporting from place to place that breaks their immersion. Other solutions involve using joysticks to virtually move users around but this causes motion sickness. Many have tried to solve the locomotion problem for VR.

Treadmill solutions like the Omni Virtuix or joystick devices under user’s feet like the 3DRudder which only allow sit-down experiences. Alternatively, locomotion has been solved in large warehouse arcades by letting users walk around. Most are impractical for mass use.

The consumer market that is emerging around Virtual and Augmented reality. There are many industry reports each with a different multi-billion dollar market prediction forecasts for the VR and AR industry going toward 2025.

Showcase our platform as an e-sport gaming platform in arcades and promote its advantages by using viral videos that show people having incredible virtual experiences with it. We are also working partner up with one of the big players in the industry to co-promote and market the Alto as the next frontier user interface.
