What is the 30under30?

30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians.

Each year, we invite our readers to nominate young Australian entrepreneurs deserving of recognition for their outstanding entrepreneurial endeavours. More.

Lisa Tran, VIC (b. 1990)

Name: Lisa Tran
Age: 27
Known for: Lisa’s Study Guides

Lisa’s business was born in 2009 from her little study room when she was 19.

“I started tutoring VCE English during my first year of university studying Bachelor of Pharmacy/Commerce and quickly noticed that there was a lack of educational resources online for VCE English students. As a past high achiever, I saw an opportunity to offer free and valuable study guides online for Year 11 and Year 12 students,” she told Anthill.

So, Lisa decided to start a blog called VCE Study Guides to fill the knowledge gap. It quickly grew momentum and popularity across Australia, with 50,000 website visitors each month in 2017!

It is now so popular Australian students, teachers and their schools that she has grown the size of her team eightfold in just two years, from 5 to 40 tutors. While accomplishing this, she also had a side project where she grew a YouTube channel to 13,000 subscribers! This YouTube channel ‑ Lisa’s Study Guides has been her most successful buzz building effort so far.

“I noticed yet again, a missing gap in the VCE market. The tutoring industry in Victoria is extremely competitive and yet no one had breached out into the YouTube platform yet,” Lisa further revealed.

“With videos being the future of social media, I wouldn’t let anyone else but myself be known as the first tutor to take on the world of YouTube. I grew to 5000 within 6 months, and now currently at 13k follower! If not by word‑of‑mouth, majority of my new students come because of my YouTube presence.”

Anthill asks: What motivates you as an entrepreneur?

I’m driven by a desire to keep myself on my toes and always be learning. However, this is just for myself. I have much stronger motivation and it is helping other millennials see what is truly like to be an entrepreneur. While we’d all love to get rich fast and have a great lifestyle, this is a somewhat romanticised idea of an ‘entrepreneur’. I am passionate in exposing the realities of running a business behind the scenes via my YouTube channel, Lisa Tran ‑ the ups and downs, the sweat and stress (and PMSing), the successes but also the failures!
