What is 30under30?

30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. This year’s batch of nominees was extensive and impressive. So much so that we believe several young talents who didn’t snag 30under30 top honors still deserve your attention and recognition. We call them our Up-and-Comers. More.

Eric Chau, NSW

Name: Eric Chau
Age: 23
Gender: Male
State: NSW

A fellow university student told Eric Chau there was a business-pitch competition coming up that boasted a top prize of a trip to Silicon Valley. Chau, an industrial design student with a handful of design awards already under his belt, jumped at the chance. But he had only two days to prepare.

Not a problem. Chau won the early May competition, sponsored by TiE Sydney, bagging a air ticket to the TiECON conference in Santa Clara, California. The trip to the State was another push in Chau’s upward trajectory.

“Through the many competitions and scholarships I have won throughout my journey studying industrial design, people can see my dedication and passion,” he says. “Being awarded first place in multiple competitions also has given me the edge to secure internships and work experience. This experience, and the portfolio that I have built around innovative products, has allowed clients to recommend and refer me to a larger audience.”

Chau’s budding business, Echaudesign, is building on achievements as a university student and intern. Chau wants to create products that help people with disabilities, that save time and money, or that are kind to the environment.

“Nonetheless, my main motivation is being able to do what I love every day. I eat, sleep and breathe what I am passionate for.”

Anthill asks: Eric Chau, what’s your superpower?

“My super power would be to make the world a safer and healthier place. There is no point having millions and billions of dollars if you’re not happy with the ones you love around you.”
