What is 30under30?

30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. This year’s batch of nominees was extensive and impressive. So much so that we believe several young talents who didn’t snag 30under30 top honours still deserve your attention and recognition. We call them our Up-and-Comers. More.

Michael Overell, NSW (b. 1984)

Name: Michael Overell
Age: 27 (Born: May 1984)
Gender: Male
State: NSW

Michael Overell had a stable, solid career in strategic consulting with McKinsey & Co. (But we won’t hold that against him.) He found corporate life to be a grind, so decided to break out on his own, and Australian SMEs are all the merrier for it.

Overell is CEO and a co-founder of RecruitLoop, an online service that connects SME owners with a selected network of employee recruiters. RecruitLoop created a hourly-pay structure that ends up saving an SME $5,000 to $10,000 per search, compared to fees charged by traditional recruitment agencies. In addition to the hourly charge for recruitment talent, SMEs have access to online video interviews and candidate testing.

In his 30under30 application, Overell used the word “disruptive” several times to describe his business. Clearly, he’s relishing the opportunity to shake up an industry, even if it meant spending months working from a spare bedroom to set up his business.

RecruitLoop is in its early stages. In the two months since a beta launch of the site, the company secured 12 recruiters who would work in its network; all have at least 10 years of industry experience. RecruitLoop also has initiated 25 client projects for SME employers.

Overell, who has degrees in commerce and organizational psychology from University of Queensland, got a jump-start for RecruitLoop when a casual coffee with a contact morphed into a full-blown investor pitch. Followup discussions have included potential venture capital from the United States. “The timing was sooner than we’d planned,” Overell said, “but it’s a positive outcome of exploiting that situation.”

Anthill asks: Michael Overell, what’s your superpower?

“Liquid nitrogen running through my veins. I have an unmatched ability to maintain a zen-like calm in all situations. I portray a balance of energy and measured confidence that instills supernatural belief in anyone I meet.”
