An independent, not-for-profit fintech hub, Stone & Chalk aims to accelerate the development of world-leading startups.

The idea was so popular that a flood of initial applicants shoved its opening back from March to August of 2015. Its intended launch venue was simply not big enough!

The company, now located at a spacious building on Bridge Street, Sydney, started with 41 initial startups. Today, it houses over 92 different startups and 300 permanent residents.

When asked, what made him most proud to be part of the organisation, Stone & Chalk CEO Alex Scandurra said, “What I’m most proud of is the very direct and tangible contribution we have made in helping our residents secure just over $101 million of direct investment during the 12 months they have been here at Stone & Chalk!” Wow!

In just a short amount of time, S&C has become a gravity hub for finance and tech organisations worldwide. That’s not shabby for a group that’s just over one year young!

By incubating companies on the leading edge of finance and technology, S&C helps lead the world in innovation. Since starting in 2015, the organisation has worked with companies, such as Ripple, to bring new ideas and platforms to the world at large.

You don’t have to be a business to earn this fintech hub’s help, though.

The group seems to love playing matchmaker. For one, they host Fintern Fever, this match-making program helps match skilled university graduates with the startups already in its fold. They’ve also played cohost to a refugee speed dating event with Refugee talent. This digital platform helps to match highly-talented refugees with startups.  No matter the charitable cause, S&C’s likely to have helped out.

The company’s employees don’t have it too shabby either. They get the newest in technology to boost everyday operations. They use Slack for instant messaging and Trello for project managing. Every week, the whole company gathers at Sweet Spot to share stories of success.

That willingness to boost the underdog, and shake off the “only take” mentality of most finance companies, earns Stone & Chalk a place on Anthill’s Coolest Company Awards.
