What are the Anthill Cool Company Awards?

The Cool Company Awards were launched in 2006 as a way for Anthill to acknowledge and celebrate Australian organisations that are doing things differently to bring about positive change. Cool Companies stay one step ahead of the rest. They breed leaders who are rule-makers and rule-breakers. They are trend-setters in attitude and action. Quite simply, they are … cool! More.

Give someone a fish and they’ll eat for a day. Teach someone to unleash their creative genius, and they may disrupt the whole seafood industry.

This, more or less, is the philosophy of Inventium, a company that does more than instruct other businesses on how to be creative — it gives them the tools to detect and predict creative thinking in their employees and recruits.

The sharpest tool in the box is the Inventium Creative Aptitude Test, or ICAT. Based on meticulous research and cutting-edge diagnostic measurements, ICAT may well be the world’s first developed psychometric test.

Inventium founder Amantha Imber is an innovator’s innovator. She professes little faith in antiquated brainstorming models, and doesn’t rely exclusively on the loudest, most outgoing people in the room to man the creativity boat. “We hate fluff — anything that is not evidence-based,” says Imber. In contrast, she says, ICAT is built on proven indicators that accurately gauge the individual’s tendency towards creative behaviours.

It should come as no surprise that an innovator like Imber has taken a multifaceted approach to marketing her product. She’s wielded her charm as a keynote speaker (on display below at her TEDx Melbourne appearance) to promote the Inventium brand. Her company holds frequent skills training workshops that draw crowds attracted to the pay-what-you-wish admissions policy. Rather pay in chocolate than in cash? Be their guest!

Inventium also gets its name recognition by partnering with BRW to run the Most Innovative Companies competition. And then there are the happy clients with whom Inventium has worked tirelessly to instill positive, productive thinking in their staffs: Deloitte New Zealand, Medibank and Kimberly-Clark are but a few who have sung their praise and gratitude.

“We are a bunch of science geeks trying to make dense, academic research digestible and practical to help real organisations generate awesome ideas that will ultimately make the world a better place,” declares Imber.

Geeks — cool? Seriously, you can’t invent this stuff.
