What are the Anthill Cool Company Awards?

The Cool Company Awards were launched in 2006 as a way for Anthill to acknowledge and celebrate Australian organisations that are doing things differently to bring about positive change. Cool Companies stay one step ahead of the rest. They breed leaders who are rule-makers and rule-breakers. They are trend-setters in attitude and action. Quite simply, they are … cool! More.

For most of us, our experience with waste management ends as soon as the rubbish goes out the door. For Chris O’Brien, it’s just the beginning.

O’Brien started ReSource Environmental Solutions because he wanted to do something different: tackle the problem of waste accumulation before it arrived at the landfill. Think of RES as a ‘waste broker’: it manufactures smart machines that break down materials and sort disposable from reusable, organic from non, to boost recycling and lower carbon output.

RES is behind the exclusive Hungry Giant range of products, which include the EPS Compactor and Food Waste Dry Decomposer. Use either or both of these bad boys to get medieval on your garbage, says the RES team, and you can expect to see your total waste reduced by over 60%. If those aren’t enough, try their balers and bottle crushers — we hear they’re royal fun.

The services are advantageous to environment-minded — and budget-minded — businesses in other ways as well. RES provides all of its services under a single contract rather than charging separately. And whereas most waste companies are inclined to push for more pickups, more volume, to make a profit, RES operates according to its clients’ sustainability needs — a set-your-own-pace, choose-your-own-terms kind of approach.

That attitude, saving clients money, doesn’t seem to be hurting O’Brien’s bottom line. Nor is the fact that RES doesn’t actually own a single truck. O’Brien has formed partnerships with over 140 suppliers to make RES products available across Australia. Word of mouth generates most of the publicity, though ultimately, the products themselves do most of the talking. Their adoption, and RES’s rising prominence, suggest a social climate that’s (happily) changing for the better.
