For centuries, jobs have provided people with status and stability and a way of life. Overlying the pursuit of the permanent job was the notion that if you’re not in a job, you’re out of one. But times are changing fast.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, about 2.5 million Australians are currently employed on a casual basis, reinforcing experts’ beliefs that this is not a passing fad but a global trend that is set to redefine the workforce.
In fact, of the 38 OECD countries Australia was ranked 30th for work-life balance with 13.2% of our population working very long hours. That may not sound like much, but when you compare it to the 0.5% of the Netherlands, it puts things in perspective.
Services firms are finding themselves needing to adapt – or risk being left behind. Reacting to the situation, services leaders are designing new operating models that allow them to better connect, orchestrate and optimise their businesses.
Some of the problem areas to be addressed include disability access and support, employment, entrepreneurship, health, housing, language, legal and migration advice, working qualifications, tracing family, and translation services.
The survey of more than 600 small business owners across the country revealed that one in two (50 per cent) respondents are not satisfied with the government’s management of the Australian economy.
