What is 30under30?
30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. This year saw a surplus of highly qualified entrants, so we thought we would highlight some of the bright and innovative nominees who just missed the Top 30 by a wink. Known for: Flex Removals
If Michael York had only Flex Removals to his credit thus far, most entrepreneurs would be impressed enough.
The removalist and trucking supply business originated when York was a 19-year-old QUT student.
He has since systematised operations, partnered it with — and later sold — a sister business, and rescaled it to home in on the mini-moving industry.
Yet the Queensland native has gone further, with CollegeLimited.com, a deals site just for university students in Australia; SMBSEO, a marketing agency; and a string of other startups that follow from his guiding principle,
“When I have a good idea for a business, I’ll start it.” Whatever ventures come next, they’ll likely find homes, as the rest have, on page 1 of Google’s rankings.
Of Flex Removals, says York, “Our key positioning strategy was online expertise as the competition didn’t and still don’t understand the importance of online.”
Anthill asks: Michael York, what motivates you as an entrepreneur?
Initially I enjoyed the ‘wow factor’ everybody saw at my achievements and accomplishments. Little did they know I wasn’t even trying that hard. It was then I realised, I really just want to surprise myself, I want to impress myself. Now every business venture I get into is purely on passion. If I don’t love it, I don’t look twice.
