What are the Anthill Cool Company Awards about?

The Cool Company Awards were launched in 2006 as a way for Anthill to acknowledge and celebrate Australian organisations that are doing things differently to bring about positive change. Cool Companies stay one step ahead of the rest. They breed leaders who are rule-makers and rule-breakers. They are trend-setters in attitude and action. Quite simply, they are … cool! More

finder.com.au [WINNER, Online]

Company: finder.com.au
Website: finder.com.au
State: NSW
Category: Online

This cool company was born when co-founder and CEO Fred Schebesta had a desire to do things better.

“At the time of starting finder.com.au, my co-founder Frank and I had been consulting for a number of large multi national corporations about how digital marketing was going to be important and we were told that TV advertising was the norm, got tired of advising others of how to do things, and so we built our own business and put our money where our mouth was and execute on our strategy.”

finder.com.au is here to help Australians save time, money and make important life choices. The comparison site wants to change how consumers think about buying everything from credit cards, phone plans, health insurance, travel deals and much more.

It does this by breaking down the barriers between banks and consumers to better inform and empower people in their financial decisions. It is completely free to use. And it’s not affiliated with any one institution or outlet (unlike most its competitors), so it’s genuine advice from a team of experts who care about helping Australians find better. Since launching in 2006, it has helped Aussies complete over 17.4 million decisions.

finder.com.au is one of only two independently owned comparison websites in Australia. “Although we are competing with the reputations of some big players, we know that our philosophy is unique. We build comparisons faster than our competitors because of our publishing, technology and ‘go-live’ culture,” Fred remarked.

What has finder.com.au changed?

In the past, this problem was solved by walking into a bricks and mortar bank building and manually compiling financial information to create a comparison. Alternatively, people searched online and trawled through reviews. Many people didn’t compare, they stayed with the same provider or made the ‘easiest’ choice – missing out on better deals. Finder.com.au condenses the process by allowing people to compare hundreds of products easily. Its competitors include Infochoice, Canstar, iSelect, Compare the Market, RateCity, Mozo and WhistleOut.

“We’re nothing like our competitors and proud of it. Operating in financial services, we like to shake things up,” Fred highlighted to Anthill, “You’ll never see me in a suit (unless it’s a spacesuit to kick off a whole-company meeting). I’m the first one to start graffiting the walls when inspiration hits.”

“Our ‘crew’ speak a universal language — our own ‘lingo’. finder is referred to as the ‘rocketship’ as we propel ourselves to new levels of greatness through uncharted terrain, and our favourite catch-cry to recognise achievement is UTTR (up and to the right). Our crew are encouraged to ‘master their craft’ supported by a generous learning and development budget.”

He went on to reveal that finder.com.au holds bi-monthly ‘hack days’ which run over the course of 24 hours. Hack Days give each member of the company the opportunity to participate in new forms of cross-team collaboration, and explore new products and processes – i.e. ‘hacks’ – that create a competitive advantage.

It is out of these hack-days that innovations, big and small, are born. This motivates crew as their have direct potential to grow a business area outside of their typical day-to-day. Furthermore, the best projects are rewarded publicly with trophies and certificates.
