What is 30under30?
30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. This year saw a surplus of highly qualified entrants, so we thought we would highlight some of the bright and innovative nominees who just missed the Top 30 by a wink. Perhaps you’ve heard of the Kym Huynh behind Native Tongue, the language-learning app series that makes vocab-building fun.
Maybe it’s the socially enabling Kym Huynh who launched WeTeachMe to allow people with unique talents to connect and exchange lessons.
Or, just as likely, it’s the Kym Huynh who proclaimed himself Plankmaster and founded the world’s largest website devoted to the art of lying down.
However you know him, the 28-year-old Melbournean has always bubbled with creative ideas by turns empowering, uplifting and playful.
“My activities are driven by a desire to do the best with what I have,” says Huynh, the son of Vietnam refugees, who has been making his parents proud as an entrepreneur since building his first website at age 15.
WeTeachMe also taught Huynh the value of giving 110%: when the startup’s funds dried up after launching, he organised a business education event that doubled as a golden networking and publicity opportunity for the team.
While he always has new ideas to develop, Huynh isn’t afraid to stick it out to make old ones reach fruition.
Kym Huynh on ‘doing what needs to be done’:
A recent pitch of mine saw the investor stand up halfway through the pitch, sit on a grand piano and start playing.
I was mortified. Was the pitch really that bad?
Next thing I know, I’m sitting next to him, mimicking what he’s playing on the piano.
A few days later, we received a phone call. He’s interested.
