What is 30under30?

30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. This year saw more outstanding entries than ever before. So we thought we would highlight some of the bright and innovative nominees who just missed Top 30 by a wink. Behold, our 2011 30under30 Honourable Mentions! More.

James Greig, QLD (b. 1983)

Name: James Greig
Age: 28 (Born: May 1983)
Gender: Male
State: QLD

Bloomtools, a Queensland-based web-development development company, took a quantum leap when founder James Greig declared he wouldn’t try to out-market hundreds of other boutique-y competitors.

Greig was confident that he had a powerful product — smart, in-house site designers; hands-off software updates for clients; and an easy-to-use toolbox that clients can use to shape the site to their e-commerce needs. His product was his hammer, and not necessarily the company name.

So he took the “white label” route, reaching out to resellers who put their own branding on the  Bloomtools solution. The result? “They benefited from a better product and I benefited from a national network of sellers with a vested interest in selling our products and services,” Greig says.

Greig, who had run his own web development business since 2004, starting building the reseller network in 2006. By 2007, the company changed its name to Bloomtools and opened its first franchise.

Today, Bloomtools has a staff of 23, seven franchises, 40 resellers in Australia and New Zealand, and more than 1,000 customers. Greig says the revenue level the company totaled in its first 18 months is now collected every 30 days.

Greig says that Bloomtools “brings CMS website design, Internet marketing, SEO and a CRM into one system where all the tools and databases work together. This makes it really easy for business owners with little or no Internet experience to understand and get results, boosting their online presence and improving their leads and sales conversions.”

In addition to simply having an attractive product, Bloomtools markets itself by making it easy for clients and potential client to understand e-commerce better. “We provide our market with a stream of seminars, workshops, webinars, e-books, conferences and events. … Gimmicks are fun, but business owners are genuinely interested in learning about the Internet and because we’re always out there providing it for free, that’s how we get most of our leads,” Greig says.

Greig has made a splash with another product he co-created — iVvy, a cloud-based event-management software solution, placed seventh in the Anthill’s 2011 SMART 100.

As for Bloomtools, Greig gives credit to his hard-working staff. Some of his designers and developers are people he met at university. He says people see his passion for knowledge and research, which gives them the confidence to join him on his journey.

“I started Bloomtools before I’d even finished my degree,” Greig says. “Now I’m the director of an international franchise as well as the co-founder of another award-winning proprietary software development company, all without sacrificing my personal and family life. I’m also a proud dad!”

Anthill asks: James Greig, what’s your superpower?

“Well, my superhero name would be Seeker of Knowledge and my super-power would be my super-sized frontal lobe, which is constantly seeking higher knowledge and understanding of the world around me.”
