What is 30under30?
30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. Each year, we invite our readers to nominate young Australian entrepreneurs deserving of recognition for their outstanding entrepreneurial endeavours. More.
Taylah Hasaballah, QLD (b. 1994)
Name: Taylah Hasaballah
Age: 18 (Born: June 1994)
Gender: Female
State: QLD
Known for: Tiger Temple
Taylah Hasaballah couldn’t stand the elite designers dictating what was fashionable, so she launched a business that would take its cue from the ground level: “the girls on the street, the bloggers, the ‘it girls’, the ones who dare to push the boundaries.”
The University of Queensland student has built up Tiger Temple with a singular vision for what and how clothing and accessory lines can be, boldly blending new ideas with old-school favourites. Indeed, she started her own vintage-inspired line when she couldn’t afford to carry the vintage designers, allowing her to sell more according to her own aesthetic.
A model herself, Hasaballah has a knack for steering publicity. As ‘fast fashion’ keeps gaining velocity, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest are musts for building the brand.
“We run competitions through social media to find new models for Tiger Temple as well as give away prizes every month,” she explains. “We have events and shows to increase our involvement in the local community.”
The numbers thus far strike a vivid pose: 10,000 Facebook views per week, more than 200 items sold, over a thousand followers on Tumblr and Instagram. And oh by the way, Tiger Temple isn’t even a year old yet.
Hasaballah’s year has been further enhanced by winning a grant through the ilab Germinate Program for new businesses — a prize that she managed to earn, she confesses, by winging it through the presentation.
“I just spoke about what we were doing and why I think it’s got potential,” she recalls. “All their questions I knew I could answer because I know my business like the back of my hand. I think any entrepreneur should!”
It’s this gift for dealing with the unexpected that has this fashionista confident in where the Tiger is going.
“Almost every problem we’re faced with is met quite nicely with an amazing solution,” Hasaballah says. “Maybe other people wouldn’t have been so open to taking all the opportunities presented, I never pass up chances and get to know everyone I meet!”
Anthill asks: Taylah Hasaballah, what motivates you as an entrepreneur?
A desire to create, grow, and evolve. I love working on something that is adding value to everyone’s lives whom it touches. I thrive off the positive feedback of my peers and audience. There is nothing I love more than doing something that has never been done and creating something from nothing!
