1. THE BEGINNING

This innovation initially came to life when…

We became aware of the difficulty mature-aged people faced finding a job.

We concluded they should be considering self-employment as a meaningful employment option rather than only focusing on waged employment.

Our challenge was to determine how to mitigate their risk, giving them the best chance of success without becoming a failed statistic.

A meeting with The University of Melbourne’s Centre for Workplace Leadership confirmed the necessary skills and traits for self-employment success were already known.

Partnering with CWL, we’ve developed an online assessment tool specifically targeting self-employment. This assessment identifies existing skills, personality traits and particular training needs.

2. WHAT & HOW

The purpose of this innovation is to…

Create risk mitigated self-employment opportunities for all people particularly the mature aged, by giving them the business skills and personality aptitude awareness as well as confidence and support required to start their own business. Importantly, the company is outcome orientated.

It does this by…

Identifying person’s core skills (business, personality traits and attributes) as they exist today, and comparing these to the known skills and attributes necessary for success in self-employment.

The assessment includes recommendations on further training to supplement their existing skills thereby helping to provide people with the confidence they need to give self-employment a decent chance of success.

3. PURPOSE & BENEFITS

This innovation improves on what came before because…

All alternative solutions center on only finding waged employment, whereas ours is to empower people to effectively do “it” for themselves.

With widespread prejudice from businesses to employ mature aged workers, our solution provides a real alternative they can action almost immediately, as opposed to the 70+ weeks it takes for the average mature aged person to find waged employment.

Its various benefits to the customer/end-user include…

Providing a structured pathway – from assessment of existing skills and traits, through bespoke training on key skillsets, to mentoring services. The pathway supports people as they explore self-employment, building their confidence and making the prospect of self-employment less daunting.

4. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

In the past, this problem was solved by…

No one. All focus has been on finding further waged employment. Anyone considering self-employment was effectively left to their own means. History shows many people fail because they do not fully appreciate the skills and commitment required.

As the retirement age rises, life expectancy increases, and the workforce becomes increasingly contract/freelance, the need to find a new solution is paramount.

Its predecessors/competitors include…

Nobody. Whilst some Government programs such as NEIS assist specific demographic groups who meet stringent financial criteria, none have a world-class assessment tool and structured support pathway at the heart to ensure an individual receives comprehensive bespoke assistance.

5. TARGET MARKET

It is made for…

Virtually anyone considering self-employment. Before a person “bets the farm” on self-employment or worse, blows their retrenchment package, loses their home or destroys their family, people should take a “Selfe” to find out what chance they have of success with their self-employment dream.

It is available for sale through…

Online via www.renewedcareers.com.au

Our marketing strategy is to…

To create awareness that self-employment should be a considered option for the mature aged unemployed and by first taking a Selfe, they can mitigate their risk.

Renewed Careers plans to execute this strategy with a combination of social and mainstream media and by partnering with stakeholders who recognise the benefits self-employment offers for the societal good.
