“I really want to own a Ferrari one day! I love cars,” proclaims Nic Blair, explaining his motivation as an entrepreneur. It is hard not to be infected by the enthusiasm and high spirits of Nic, who is handling not one but two business ventures at the same time.
One is Brus Media, founded in 2012, a mobile advertising network focused on the growth and monetisation of mobile apps, operating on a cost-per-install model; meaning advertisers only pay each time a user installs their app. It’s a fast-growing, dynamic industry and Nic is working with large brands like Zynga, Big Fish Casino and Domain.
The second is Search Factory, launched in 2011; a digital marketing agency, with a full in-house team developing custom strategies for clients. The core services are in Search Engine Optimisation, Search Engine Marketing, Content Marketing, Social Media and Content Development.
It is clear that Nic is not a stickler for doing things the usual or pre-ordained way. This is clear from the way he describes Brus Media as a “Cowboy” venture through the Wild West. It is this enthusiasm and his desire to “create something from nothing” that has helped him not only run, but make a complete success of the two businesses.
Nic was featured in Anthill’s 2014 30under30 winners list and he is back this year, proving that he is here to stay. Brus Media has shown revenue growth of 2358% from June 2013 to June 2015, with average installs for advertisers reaching 300,000 per month. Similarly, Search Factory has had a growth of 470% from June 2012 to June 2015 and a team of over 50 people. The numbers don’t lie.
He attributes several things to the boost he has seen in the two companies, including being awarded a spot on the winner’s list of last year’s 30Under30. Apart from this, Nic and his businesses have received accolades such as Smart Company’s 30under30, placing as a finalist for Brisbane Young Entrepreneur and for Lord Mayor’s Young Business Person of the Year in addition to placing in BRW’s Fast Starters for Search Factory. But he is not resting on his laurels. He is currently a finalist for this year’s Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award.
There is something to be said about Nic’s mantra of hard work. When Anthill asked if luck had ever played a role, he answered, “To be honest I think you create your own luck. The non-stop hustle of working hard and ensuring that all the teams in the businesses are performing at a high standard has led to continual growth and results.”

“I would say my super power is still ‘Happiness’. It sounds lame at first, but I’ve been told by my fiancé, colleagues and friends alike that I am unusually happy. Nothing seems to phase me or stress me out much and as an entrepreneur, this super power has helped me to pursue those risks that others might not, keep a cool head through the task of growing multiple businesses without clouded judgments and has reflected on to our team of people, ultimately creating what they consider to be an awesome environment. So I’d say ‘happiness’ is my super power!”
