What are the Anthill Cool Company Awards?

The Cool Company Awards were launched in 2006 as a way for Anthill to acknowledge and celebrate Australian organisations that are doing things differently to bring about positive change. Cool Companies stay one step ahead of the rest. They breed leaders who are rule-makers and rule-breakers. They are trend-setters in attitude and action. Quite simply, they are … cool! More.

Voztec Helmets [WINNER]

Company: Voztec Helmets

State: NSW
Category: Innovation

Brilliant ideas may not fall from the sky, but skydivers do. So it was that John Vozzo, feeling a rush of inventiveness in that moment of uncertainty before the chute opens, thought: hey, the least I could use is a helmet that actually fits. Perhaps the helmet industry could as well?

After (safely) touching ground, he met up with his friend, Mark Bryant, and the two put their noggins together to create a helmet — the Voztec Helmet — that didn’t just look super cool, but provided a safer and better fit than existing helmets.

The brilliance of the concept is this: in place of the usual chin strap, an adjustable chin cup and rolled lower edge hold the helmet in place for a tight, comfortable fit. The helmet also comes apart in the back via a safety release mechanism, which means, simply, less post-accident trauma and easier removal.

The founders may be a few years removed from a startup crowd that skews GenY, but they’re not letting age stand in their way. They’ve already bridged that gap with a key endorsement from motorcycling champ Casey Stoner. The company is a ubiquitous presence at trade shows, and because of the helmet’s applicability to so many different sporting fields and law enforcement professions, the sky really is the limit.

As the Voztec guys put it in their application: “Anything can be done if you have lots of fiberglass and an imagination.”

The remaining challenge lies in protecting the by-product of those two. The Voztec team has already received a worldwide trademark and a USA patent for the helmet. They’ve integrated other technologies also, like a QR code on the helmet that links to a video demonstrating its use. Has safety ever looked, or felt, this good?

“We are protecting our kids who fall from horses,” the team wrote. “Water skiers and motor bike riders who cant be moved. We are showing that you can think outside the square, that Australia is a melting pot of innovation. We are making freedom feel more comfortable as you corner at 180 kmh.”
