What are the Anthill Cool Company Awards?

The Cool Company Awards were launched in 2006 as a way for Anthill to acknowledge and celebrate Australian organisations that are doing things differently to bring about positive change. Cool Companies stay one step ahead of the rest. They breed leaders who are rule-makers and rule-breakers. They are trend-setters in attitude and action. Quite simply, they are … cool! More.

Pie Face [WINNER]

Company: Pie Face
Website: pieface.com.au
State: NSW
Category: Big Kahuna

This isn’t your grandfather’s meat pie.

Cheeky and upstart retailer Pie Face is challenging perceptions of what the iconic comfort food can be: reinventing pies with fresh ingredients and flavours, and bringing them to the world.

To saturate a super-competitive fast food market, Pie Face follows a model that might be called luxury convenience: French-style gourmet recipes, handmade pies, at all 76 locations, but still quick, still convenient. (As many shoppers will report, the espresso isn’t shabby either.)

They also have fun with the brand’s social media campaigns, such as the ‘Face Off’ drawing contest app, or the ‘Wake Me Up Wednesday’ free coffee promo on Twitter. Surely, Gramps never saw those coming.

Pie Face now has the scaling tools in place to grow quickly, with a target of opening 30 new stores next year. Which leads into the big question: can this once and always blisteringly cool company become the undisputed face of Australian food retail… in the world?

This year witnessed the writing of the first chapter of Pie Face’s international presence with the opening of two stores in the USA. As if the management didn’t savour enough of a challenge, both stores are located within walking distance of the busiest tourist attractions in New York City. David Letterman gave free airtime on his show to their Broadway location, and Steve Wynn is granting his endorsement as a cornerstone investor.

Taking a bite of the Big Apple shows its seriousness about hairy and audacious goal setting. The ultimate goal: to open and franchise 10,000 stores worldwide, becoming Australia’s first billion-dollar company.

In their bid for retail disruption (and good old domination), we salute Pie Face as one of Australia’s hottest Cool Companies.

Yes, hotter than a hot pie. And that’s hot!
