What are the Anthill Cool Company Awards?

The Cool Company Awards were launched in 2006 as a way for Anthill to acknowledge and celebrate Australian organisations that are doing things differently to bring about positive change. Cool Companies stay one step ahead of the rest. They breed leaders who are rule-makers and rule-breakers. They are trend-setters in attitude and action. Quite simply, they are … cool! More.

Change2 provides an online educations program for large Australian companies that want to make deep, lasting changes in environmental sustainability.

One of Change2’s founders ran a business that developed custom online education for changing companies’ actions and attitudes toward the environment. With the help of angel investors, that business was bought out and used as a substructure for Change2, which pushes an off-the-shelf product suite rather than a customised approach.

The company also runs change2.net, a social network for sustainability professionals. Change2 invests a lot of time in networking and presenting at events, and in working with government services such as Industry NSW, UK Trade and Investment, and the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water.

Change2’s client base is a diverse bunch that includes Bayer, Suncorp, CSC, Melbourne Water, ETSA Utilities and Bovis Lend Lease.

“We exist to help other organisations transform themselves to be more environmentally, socially and economically sustainable, with happier and more engaged staff,” said Change2 director and co-founder Leon Young. “We do this through a productised online approach which hasn’t been attempted before.

Young pointed to an online program conducted recently at Bayer’s national headquarters in Sydney. After getting the full dose of sustainability education, the participants were polled. Young said 81 percent wanted more education, 91 percent wanted to be directly involved in sustainability practices and 100% felt the program would be beneficial to co-workers.

Management and staff at Change2 don’t have fixed work hours. They only are asked to meet commitments to the company, to colleagues and to clients.

“Team members are actively involved in big-picture strategy, as well as driving bottom-up innovation,” Young said. The company has collected online media and education awards in the past year from AIMIA, AIIA and LearnX. The AIMIA award earned the staff a night out at Bodega.

Young also points to the team as a prime example of Change2’s coolness. “The way we work together to help our clients achieve extraordinary things is constantly exciting. The quality of the work we do, and the creativity that underpins it, results in a tremendous sense of pride and belonging within our team.

“For me personally, this is the business I always wanted to work in, so having helped create it is tremendously satisfying.”

Teaching companies how to introduce sustainable practices, while focusing on actual, tangible, often financial benefits to a business, was considered very cool in the eyes of our judges. Plus, by helping organisations reduce their carbon commissions, Change2 is also helping the world become a cooler place… quite literally.
