Name: Holly Kershaw
Age: 28 (Born: June 1988)
Known for: Fizzics Education – http://www.fizzicseducation.com.au
Holly Kershaw, 29, pursued her dream of “being paid to blow stuff up for a living” and she achieved just that when she got hired as the Education Director for Fizzics Education. Fizzics is a company that delivers engaging science programs to over 250,000 kids a year.
Kershaw is passionate about delivering quality science education to kids across Australia and internationally. Recognized for her efforts, in 2016, Holly won the Young Business Executive section of the Western Sydney Awards for Business Excellence.
She is best known for challenging the status quo. With a dislike for inefficiencies and systems that don’t always work for everybody, Kershaw will continually ask why something happens the way it does, then gives her blunt opinion of what she really thinks about the stuff that just doesn’t work, never holding back by suggesting improvements.
Working in science education, Kershaw realised that schools have become too safe. “Many scientists will tell you they were inspired to become a scientist because of the bangs!” That’s where Fizzics Education comes in, they have built a reputation of having the proper gear and doing the experiments that many teachers either can’t do, or are too scared to do, in order to excite their students and engage them in the world of science.
The art of persuasion helped Kershaw get her position with Fizzics. With no education qualifications and very little teaching experience, along with the fact that she was fresh out of university, Fizzics Education decided to take a chance on her.
“My first shows were disasters, but my eye for business and detail meant that they kept me around. I was soon in a managerial role and now I manage the whole educational arm of the business – not bad for somebody who isn’t a teacher!”
Kershaw’s greatest entrepreneurial achievement is helping Fizzics Education grow as a company. She has helped the team grow since she got hired six years ago from just five people in Sydney to 25 people across the east coast in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra.
Anthill asked Kershaw, what is your super-power?
“I can make anybody interested in science and can find a demonstration of a scientific theory in almost anything.”
