About 30under30 and the Editors’ Ten:

30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. This year saw a surplus of highly qualified entrants — far more than the 30 spots reserved for the best and brightest. We thought we would spotlight 10 innovative nominees who just missed the Top 30, yet impressed our judges enough to merit special attention. Behold, our Editors’ Choice Honourable Mentions for 2012! More.

David Wei, VIC (b. 1988)

Name: David Wei
Age: 24 (Born: August 1988)
Gender: Male
State: VIC
Known for: Venuemob, Crowdmass

David Wei may be less famous for any company he co-founded than for the company that bought him out.

That’s hardly a weak point, since his first business was Crowdmass, a specialty group-buying site, and the acquisition was made by Groupon.

Yes, that Groupon.

After the American giant finally broke into the Australian market last year, Wei joined the Groupon Australia management team to guide it to the top of the industry.

Yet the Melbourne entrepreneur, who’s barely out of uni, doesn’t see the buyout as cutting short a career.

Wei, indeed, is on to his second business: Venuemob is an elaborate directory of events venues in a given locale (be they restaurants or boats) for easily comparison and booking.

“We started the business to solve our own problems,” he says. “We were always organising events but had difficulty finding the right venue.”

Entrepreneurship, for now, remains the only viable venue for his career. “I view staying still as moving backwards,” says Wei.

“I’m entrepreneurial because I believe in my own ability to create value for others.”

Anthill asks: David Wei, what is your super power?

The ability to get an idea to a revenue-generating business in a month. Basically the execution focus for me is very important. An idea is worth very little without brilliant execution behind it.
