What is 30under30?
30under30 is an Anthill initiative that was launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. Each year, we invite our readers to nominate young Australian entrepreneurs deserving of recognition for their outstanding entrepreneurial endeavours. More.
Dorothy Polka, VIC (b. 1985)
Name: Dorothy Polka
Age: 25 (Born: February 1985)
Gender: Female
State: VIC
“As much as you think it’s the best job in the world looking at beautiful wedding photos all day, it really isn’t easy. Sometimes I get so swept up in a wedding, leaving out any photo feels like I’m doing the couple a disservice. I want to inspire you with their love, their choices and the way they shared their day.”
So begins yet another gentle but enthusiastic blog post on Polka Dot Bride, an online marketplace and inspiration clearinghouse for Australian couples preparing to say “I do.”
The business was started in 2007 by a Sydney-area woman who is now 25 years old and and who carefully maintains her anonymity on her site and on this profile (Dorothy Polka — Dot Polka … get it? On her site, she goes by Ms. Polka).
She says Polka Dot Bride is Australia’s leading wedding blog, is attracting a large percentage of international readers and “continues to grow from strength to strength.”
Her blog posts, like the one above, build on photos and info sent to her by newlyweds. She also rounds up the content of recent bridal magazines and profiles a “vendor of the month.”
Outside of the quirkiness and joy of its main blogger and editor, Polka Dot Bride’s main attraction is an extensive directory of wedding services, along with sites for ceremonies and honeymoons. It’s one-stop-shopping for the biggest day of your life. The site also has a cadre of secondary and guest bloggers, all cleaving to the anonymity espoused by their leader.
Asked to describe what drives her business-wise, Ms. Polka replies: “I never give up. I think entrepreneurs have to have the wherewithal to do the mundane (picking up the mail) to the amazing (talking to some of the most amazing magazine editors). You have to do it all and fall in love with it.”
