What is the 30under30?
30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians.
Each year, we invite our readers to nominate young Australian entrepreneurs deserving of recognition for their outstanding entrepreneurial endeavours. More.
Darren Brown, VIC (b. 1988)
Name: Darren Brown
Age: 28
Gender: MALE
State: VIC
Known for: Expense Check
Everyone knows how it feels to be short on time and money, especially small business owners. Darren Brown’s app Expense Check is an expense managing tool for business owners who want to save money.
The app analyses business expenses by integrating with the company’s accounting software. It then compares current suppliers against the market and makes it easy to switch to more efficient suppliers.
“Expense Check exists because we believe every business should be able to make great buying decisions independent of size,” says Darren.
As apparent by his collaborative spirit, this isn’t Darren’s first entrepreneurial endeavor. He’s also been involved in startups Vinomofo and Aussie Commerce. Between the teams he’s built, Darren has raised over $4 million revenue.
His success has been a product of thinking outside the box. In 2015, Darren promoted Expense Check at Xerocon by setting up a mechanical bull with the phrase “we give a buck” displayed on the side.
Not only did his team have fun with this marketing display, but Expense Check also gained 250 new clients.
This is just one example of the collaborative and innovative nature of the company, Darren says.
Although, keeping an innovative and positive mind doesn’t always come easy. Darren says among many, scaling is always his biggest obstacle.
“Once the concept has been proven, its time to grow and scale and with that comes pain and 16 hour days,” Darren says.
Despite how daunting the task was, Darren was able to conquer the art of scaling when he grew the Vinomofo team from zero to 55 in two years. It took crunched deadlines and soaring stress, but Darren mastered the thing that haunts him most, he says.
Building teams and helping people develop is what keeps Darren going, he says.
“What motivates me more than anything is to watch people grow around me and enjoy the challenges that come their way,” Darren says.
