Noticing a lack of service being provided by other companies during the mining boom, Cory Byers founded KBSS Engineering, a specialist mechanical company.
KBSS Engineering provides a range of onsite services, such as laser aligning of turbines and conveyor drives and building specific machines for required jobs. Cory’s company also provides other mechanical and electrical services to varying companies.
Cory says over the last three years, KBSS Engineering has been able to almost double their growth each year. Currently, the company has 80 employees.
Recently, Cory’s company won Best Startup at the WA Telstra Business Awards. KBSS Engineering also won Best Business in Karratha at the Karratha Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry Awards.
Cory’s success didn’t come without a climb. After 18 months of operation, KBSS Engineering was low on clients, very low. Also, the work they were doing came to an end much sooner than anticipated.
Cory combatted this setback by quickly diversifying the company to be able to do work in other areas.
The few months it took to diversity were extremely stressful, Cory says, but he didn’t walk away from that time without a lesson learned.
Cory says because of that struggle, he now focuses on diversifying and broadening the company as much as possible.
Since reaching out to a wider range of clients, Cory says many of his customers are repeats or referrals from previous customers.
Aside from word of mouth, KBSS Engineering runs radio advertisements to generate buzz, which Cory says has been a huge success.
His knack for successful business endeavours may be a product of his confident nature, Cory says.
“I give people the impression that I know exactly what I’m talking about and sometimes I have absolutely no clue whatsoever until I research it later,” Cory laughs.
Cory says this confidence has been key in landing big contracts and he believes it to be an essential quality of an entrepreneur.
