What is 30under30?
30under30 is an Anthill initiative that was launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. Each year, we invite our readers to nominate young Australian entrepreneurs deserving of recognition for their outstanding entrepreneurial endeavours. More.
Andrew Craig, QLD (b. 1983)
Name: Andrew Craig
Age: 27 (Born: April 1983)
Gender: Male
State: QLD
Andrew Craig has been tinkering with computers for nearly two decades. That’s not a typo.
When Craig was just a sprout, his step-grandfather brought him along to a computer auction. He learned the fun of fixing a faulty machine and selling it for a profit. He sold his first computer for $1,000 at age 12.
The business he runs today, Computer Empire, was started in his mother’s garage at age 18. Today, the company runs out of a store in Brisbane’s central business district. Craig designed his own computer brand, the “Mpire,” and sells about 50 machines a week.
Craig says turnover has surpassed $2 million per year. The biggest customer for his computers is the Vodaphone network in Papua New Guinea, with 2,000 machines.
One of the refreshing things about Craig is that he kicks it old-style in his marketing and advertising. He advertises on radio and in newspapers. He prints out thousands of flyers and slaps them on windshields at university open days. He gives hotels and nightclubs branded coasters during university holidays and at the start of semesters. And he doesn’t shy away from ad themes like “The Empire Strikes Back.”
Oh, the Force is strong with this one.
“What motivates me is the absolute freedom and the endless opportunities being an entrepreneur provides,” Craig says. “What drives me on a personal level is to achieve financial success and freedom that will allow me to provide for all of my family and to live life to the fullest.”
Andrew Craig’s words to live by:
“The harder I work, The luckier I get!”
