Your first look at the Apple iPad

This week, Apple's much anticipated iPad became available for US consumers. In Australia, we can't expect to see them floating around our offices and coffee-shops until late April (at the earliest). But to keep your inner-early-adopter satiated until then, hear are a couple of user reviews from the crew at Mashable keen to share their tech-lust.

What do we want? Shiny objects! When do we want them? NOW!

“All humans want is to touch and own shiny objects. I am pretty sure it is hard-wired into our brains right alongside breathing, pumping blood, sex and sleeping. You might think you’re above all that, but you’re not.

The Woz explains how sleep deprivation led to colour displays

Major inventions and technical breakthroughs often happen by accident. Here legendary Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak explains how, while working with Steve Jobs to meet a deadline for Atari, he went four days without sleep, leading to one of his greatest technological breakthroughs.

Of course Apple’s iPad isn’t what it was hyped up to be

The brand that normally can do no wrong is now feeling the unfamiliar sting of consumers and tech mavens worldwide who believe their expectations have been thoroughly unmet.

Microsoft CEO asked to sign a student’s Macbook. Scribbles something almost funny.

When a plucky young Apple fanboy asked Ballmer to sign his Macbook during a visit to Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee last week, the Microsoft Motivator-in-Chief played along, even scrawling a personal note along with his name.

Lethal mini-ninjas star in Google’s AWESOME new Nexus One viral video

There's no denying that Apple's iPhone has a huge headstart on Google's new Nexus One phone. But with uber cool promos like this one, it won't be long before all the cool kids will be brandishing a 'ninja phone'.

Will Apple ever grow up and seize a chunk of the business market? Well...

I often get accused of bashing Microsoft and Oracle. In the interests of balance, here’s my message to Apple: If you want to go after enterprise business, make it a priority. Don’t toss it out there if it’s something you only plan to pursue in between hacky sack sessions and iPhone love-ins.

iBend – a useful low-tech iPhone accessory with panache

iPhone owners delight in exploring many of the creative third-party applications that are release every day via the Apple store. Many of these are awesome . But in the scramble to download the latest high-tech apps, it's easy to miss those low-tech accessories that you will likely use more often than most apps.

Is this what the magazine of the future will look like… again?

Over the past two weeks, we have published the Sun Newspaper’s parody of the iPhone ads (and other mobile alternatives to print newspapers), Time Inc's prediction of what magazines of the future might look like and a fake (or real) leak of Apple's new Tablet Mac (aka MacTablet aka TabletMac aka iPad aka Apple Slate). But this concept piece put together by design collective BERG certainly has wow factor.

Is this the new Apple Mac Tablet or a clever fake?

This clip, currently doing the viral circuit, is supposedly of a new Apple Tablet (aka MacTablet aka TabletMac aka iPad aka Apple Slate, etc.). However, the clickerati have not yet decided whether to hail it as an exciting leak or a very clever fake. Either way, we hope something like it will be coming to a Mac store sometime soon. It's Awe-some! (And makes Amazon's Kindle look like a poorly crafted children's toy.)

Check out Stanford’s avant-garde iPhone Orchestra

What do tech-head muso students do in their spare time? Well the ones at Stanford University in California started an orchestra in which every member has the same instrument with the capacity to produce a near limitless variety of sound. As you can see in this excellent New York Times video profile (read the accompanying article here), the end result is avant-guarde to say the least (think Yo Yo Ma on LSD).

Windows 7 – who gives a $#%&!?

This has to be one of the most anticipated yet underwhelming launches in Microsoft's history. Apparently, we were supposed to be so excited about the launch that we would host a party in honour of it! Come on, MS. Really. Generally speaking, I like your stuff. But am I going to throw a party in honour of it? Not unless you're paying for the booze.
