Cyber security is quite a complex topic, so much so that many may not understand it in the slightest. Sam Crowther feels just the opposite. He’s built a cyber security company from the ground up and it seems to keep on growing.
“I wanted to commercialize two ideas: eliminating passwords and improving website security,” Sam says, which is exactly what he’s done.
His company Kasada offers two cyber security technologies for enterprises: Kasada Authenticator, a multi-factor authentication platform and Kasada Polyform, a secure web gateway, both of which are patent protected.
In its first 18 months, Kasada had raised over $1 million from investors, won the Tech23 award for most innovative product and service, won the Monash University 2013 award for best website design and functionality and landed PwC, ME Bank and Sydney Opera House as clients.
While creating his company, Sam had to find ways to put himself and his product in the spotlight.
Once while at a security conference in the United States, Sam happened upon a CNN Money reporter. Sam spontaneously pitched his story, which the reporter ended up publishing. The article generated more than 100,000 visits to the Kasada site.
Though this helped Kasada take off, Sam’s journey to this point proved challenging.
At first, Sam was told his first product was unique, but not unique enough to compete with U.S. players.
“I took this feedback and reinvented it into a multi-factor enterprise ready solution,” Sam says.
Sam says problem solving is one of his biggest passions, especially in the world of cyber security. Unlike many people, Sam says he’s comfortable with risk and uncertainty.
When asked what his superpower is, Sam says, “Cyptography. The ability to quickly diagnose a cyber security problem and write code to block the most determined attackers.”
