1. THE BEGINNING

This innovation initially came to life when…

I saw first hand the problems workers were facing in applying complex, paper based workplace safety information across high risk worksites. A lack of knowledge around workplace hazards results in significant fatality and injury rates: globally a person dies of work related injuries every fifteen seconds, that’s more than 2.3M people who are killed on the job each year. International research proves that increasing worker situation awareness directly results in reduces workplace incidents, and our vision to create a world where everyone comes home from work links to this – we’re designed & built for workers everywhere.

The purpose of this innovation is to…

provide real time, location specific workplace safety information through augment reality and interactive mapping. We do this specifically for frontline workers with something almost everyone has – smartphones. These workers are highly tech enabled!

It does this by…

allowing workers to identify and detail workplace hazards based on their location in 3D – latitude, longitude and altitude. Safety information is then communicated through the augmented reality and mapping formats based on a workers location in relation to the hazards. Information is entered directly into the smartphones and is made available to all relevant people within minutes.

3. PURPOSE & BENEFITS

This innovation improves on what came before because…

current products rely on managers completing checklists and audits, which are lagging, moment in time indicators of workplace compliance. This method does not cater to dynamic workplaces and worker audiences. Checklists and audits are simple metrics tested against agreed criteria and do not improve safety – the only improvements to gain are in compliance and productivity.

Its various benefits to the customer/end-user include…

the ability to identify, detail and share critical workplace safety information through a simple to use and readily available hardware/software combination. Workplaces can change by the minute and The Safety Compass is designed and built to facilitate for these environments

4. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

In the past, this problem was solved by…

completing checklists in either paper or electronic format, reducing knowledge sharing and creating a silo’d approach to critical workplace safety information. When this approach is applied to a large scale construction or refinery site for example, the amount of paperwork generated in colossal – I’ve seen one of these paper based systems take up 55 A4 folders!

Its predecessors/competitors include…

iAuditor – electronic checklists. SafeSite – electronic checklists. Both of the products are aimed at compliance & productivity for management audiences. CodeSafe – QR code based safety training videos. SignOnSite – location based safety newsletters.

5. TARGET MARKET

It is made for…

workers in utilities, construction and engineering workplaces, which employ 20-25% of the global workforce, equal to some 800M people. These industries are traditionally high risk and dynamic, which by nature account for the majority of work related fatalities and injuries.

Around 50% of our target market is located in the Asia Pacific Region, so we are ideally located to branch out into this region.

Having said that The Safety Compass can be applied to any workplace, the applicability of this is seen through our endorsement with the National Farmers Federation.

It is available for sale through…

the iOS and Android App Stores, with pre registration required prior to access.

Our marketing strategy is to…

target industry innovators through a number of formats including social media advertising and traditional print media. By on boarding industry leaders we are able to not only influence their competitors and suppliers but mandate app use with their large contractor workforces. The benefits of contractor app use include a broader sharing of critical workplace safety information
