What is the 30under30?

30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians.

Each year, we invite our readers to nominate young Australian entrepreneurs deserving of recognition for their outstanding entrepreneurial endeavours. More.

Declan White, WA (b. 1984)

Name: Declan White
Age: 29
Gender: Male
State: WA

Declan White represents the immigrant spirit in Australian entrepreneurship. Smart, hard-working, hungry for success and security, and certainly risk-taking.

He came from Ireland, arriving with only a backpack in the August of 2008. He began working for various construction companies across Australia, noticed opportunities and within two years “decided to give it a go myself and the rest is history.”

Five years later, White’s company, Monford Group, provides jobs to over 200 Australian families. It is a multi-disciplinary construction company specialising in the infrastructure and resources sector.

White’s motivation is phenomenal, even for an immigrant, and that may explain most of his success.

He’s always wanted to be the best at anything he did. He is ambitious and driven, and sets high goals.

“When I started the business I set the goals of $5 million turnover for the first year, $10 million for the second and $20 for the third. Each year I smashed these goals. I wanted to get all ISO accreditation’s at once, again unheard of, but I did it this year in January,” he says proudly.

And, what about the luck of the Irish, as they say?

Yes, of course, it may have played a part, White concedes readily. “Maybe because I came from a country that suffer economically, I am keen to make the most of my chance in Australia. But every opportunity that came my way I leaped at the chance to make the most of it…I say you make your own luck!” he says.

On the other hand, learning the ‘Australian way” hasn’t been easy. It’s probably been his greatest challenge.

“From industrial relations legislation to the Australian tax system, I had to learn a completely different set of rules from my motherland. I put myself through courses, across all aspects of the business. I sought out and found the best advisers, even though this was initially hard given I didn’t know anyone in this country,” he recalls.

Anthill asks: Declan White, how are you entrepreneurial?

“I have vision, I see what I want and go get it. I’m opportunistic and see advantageous moments. I’m innovative and creative, I have the ability to make it happen. I’m driven and hard-working, I don’t stop till my goals are achieved. I’m humble and loyal, I don’t forget where I have come from and who have helped me.”
