1. THE BEGINNING

This innovation initially came to life when…

Joseph (with a technology background) saw his wife, Sally (a psychologist), photocopying paper based resources and forms for her clients and wondered why there was no electronic system on which to centrally store and manage client data. A need was identified for a collaborative workspace on which a therapist could work with their clients using schema therapy (for treating complex psychological disorders). Over the following months the necessary functions were identified and planning on the design and format were sketched out in a site wireframe before the idea was vetted by Sally’s professional colleagues. Secure Nest was hatched.

2. WHAT & HOW

The purpose of this innovation is to…

…enhance connection between therapist and client between sessions, with view that use of the platform alongside face-to-face therapy could reduce therapy duration by increasing intensity. This could provide a solution to diminishing healthcare resources and limited access to psychological therapy.

It does this by…

…providing a collaborative platform on which therapists and their clients can complete therapy tasks, share information, communicate securely and apply strategies to real world difficulties. It allows the therapeutic work to be accessible without additional therapist time and can be viewed and edited using any internet connected device. The platform provides structure to the therapy process.

3. PURPOSE & BENEFITS

This innovation improves on what came before because…

…therapists were using paper based materials and forms with their clients, this was cumbersome, did not provide a centralised location for therapy material and likely resulted in fewer clients using the tools provided by their therapist (outside of session). Secure Nest is the only tool of this kind for schema therapy and made the therapy process more interactive and collaborative.

Its various benefits to the customer/end-user include…
*Meeting clients’ needs between sessions
*Providing a sense of ongoing connection and sharing
*Facilitating awareness and reflection in the moment
*Self-monitoring, tracking therapeutic progress
*Ease of access to therapy tools, organisation of information
*Contributing to collaboration and sense of togetherness

4. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

In the past, this problem was solved by…
*Using paper based forms for exercises.
*Lengthy emails with clients, sometimes with attachments which could be misplaced.
*Clients contacting their therapist when they may not be available.
*Clients would provide updates in session instead of in the moment while experiencing the difficulty.
*Paper based data collection for measuring therapy progress which made it more difficult to manage for the therapist.

Its predecessors/competitors include…

…research based tool, Priovi, a module based platform, only available in German and specific to a particular diagnosis (BPD). Also, Psybot, mobile self-help app (based on schema therapy) used to shape users’ thoughts. Neither is directly comparable to Secure Nest.

5. TARGET MARKET

It is made for…

…clients and their therapists using schema therapy.

Personality disorders are complex psychological disorders affecting 10-13% of the adult population. One third of outpatients are diagnosed with a personality disorder.
According to the Australian National Survey of Mental Health and Well-Being, 4.8% of the Australian full-time workforce has a personality disorder.

Schema therapy was developed by Jeffrey Young for use in treatment of personality disorders and chronic DSM Axis I disorders. Schema therapy is proven to be an effective and cost-effective treatment for personality disorders and longstanding Axis-I disorders, more so than other treatments.

It is available for sale through…

…a subscription to the online platform at www.securenest.org

It is currently available in English and Dutch, we expect to expand the languages available in the near future.

Access is purchased using a renewing PayPal subscription.

Our marketing strategy is to…

Secure Nest is the first platform of its kind for schema therapy which places us in an ideal position to capture majority market share. We have been invited to participate in an international research project investigating the clinical and cost effectiveness of Secure Nest, this will position us ideally for marketing to therapists using schema therapy globally.
