What is 30under30?

30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. This year saw a surplus of highly qualified entrants, so we thought we would highlight some of the bright and innovative nominees who just missed the Top 30 by a wink. Behold, our 2012 30under30 Honourable Mentions! More.

Scott Middleton, NSW (b. 1987)

Name: Scott Middleton
Age: 24 (Born: December 1987)
Gender: Male
State: NSW
Known for: Terem Technologies

When asked how Terem Technologies was funded, Scott Middleton replies, “by customers.”

Without capital or credit, he generated his cash flow by pre-selling services to customers and using the sales to build the full business. And it helps that Middleton is a grand master of software development.

Terem has already developed a digital phonebooth for Bl!nk Republic, piloted a mobile coupon service with Optus, and delivered a web application as part of a project for the Australian Federal Government.

When your background includes publishing a mobile game when you’re 15, hitting it big should be a foregone conclusion.

Still, Middleton says, running an enterprise is invaluable because of the thrill of seizing on an opportunity: “the moment one of our new customers said, ‘We’re going with you instead of Deloitte Digital,’ was deeply satisfying.”

Anthill asks: Scott Middleton, what’s your super power?

I’d like to be sort of like Captain Planet, except instead of being a combination of Wind, Fire, Water, etc., I’d be a combination of People (skills), Persistence, Passion and Perfection (in the sense that we must strive for it but know that it is folly to try to always achieve it commercially).
