1. THE BEGINNING
This innovation initially came to life when…
…I was researching why so many teenagers are killing themselves on the road, and discovered that up to 95% of all fatalities are caused by human error. Over the last 50 years every aspect of road safety has been improved EXCEPT for the way we teach people to drive. Having worked in professional motorsport for over 25 years, and been involved in a fatal accident when I was 22, I realised that competency is the key to keeping safe on the road. myDRIVESCHOOL has been developed to increase competencies and decrease fatalities.
2. WHAT & HOW
The purpose of this innovation is to…
…cognitively teach future road users (digital natives) basic road rules, skills/drills, hazard and spatial awareness using modern technologies to bring driver training into the 21st Century
It does this by…
…combining simulation and gaming technology to develop a modulated driver training program for students to use prior to ever getting into a real car. myDRIVESCHOOL is delivered on PC with portable steering wheel/pedal set and optional Virtual Reality version available. This program is designed to engage and educate, in a safe, controlled and cost effective manner.
3. PURPOSE & BENEFITS
This innovation improves on what came before because…
…full simulators were/are very expensive and can only train one person at a time. By combining the simulation with gaming, and delivering online thousands of people can use the program simultaneously. The program has been designed by experts in driver training, simulation, gaming, road safety and education. There has never been anything on the market remotely like myDRIVESCHOOL.
Its various benefits to the customer/end-user include…
…reduction in road trauma and costs associated with same ($32B pa) for Governments, reduction in OHS risks for professional driver trainers and overall reduction in stress/anxiety for every parent and every teen when they start driving.
4. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
In the past, this problem was solved by…
…propaganda, Governments advising that the fatality rate is decreasing due to policy changes and advertising campaigns, whereas the crash incident rate is the highest its ever been. Described by FIA as ‘an epidemic on wheels”” – with an estimated 2 million fatalities globally per year due to road trauma by 2020.
Its predecessors/competitors include…
…large, very expensive simulators which are not accessible to the majority; smaller 3 screen simulators which again, service limited numbers and are difficult to get equipment to market or market to equipment. Otherwise it’s traditional driver training with professional instructors.
5. TARGET MARKET
It is made for…
…Pre-Learner drivers for use before they ever get into the drivers seat of a real car. myDRIVESCHOOL will teach them acceleration, braking, vehicle manouvreability, hazard/ spatial awareness, intersections and emergency braking drills. It will ideally bedelivered in a classroom environment – with around 10-12 stations with 20-24 students. Annually there are approximately 300,000 16year olds in Australia, and approximately 350,000 new Drivers licences allocated per year. The program would also be suitable for testing of the elderly, disability and rehabilitation training, international licensure and vocational training.
It is available for sale through…
…schools initially in Victoria and NSW from June 2017, then nationally and with some minor recoding can be scaled for international markets. Selected TAFE’s will also run Occupational Road Safety courses in their e-Learning centres with VR.
Our marketing strategy is to…
…facilitate regional clusters of schools to build evidence base for the program. From there use a combination of social media and targeted sponsorships to generate both brand/product awareness and mainstream PR. The latter will provide a knowledge platform for parents, educators and students to lobby for the program to be made available in their respective school/s.
