Melissa Ran, 30, along with co-founder Susan Zhang, 29, started China Ambition in 2016 with intention of helping Australian businesses to better engage with Chinese audiences by specialising in marketing localisation services, translation and digital content creation.
Noticing an opportunity for a niche market this duo recognised that Australian businesses were not taking advantage of these great opportunities because of the barriers of cross-cultural trade.
Ran and Zhang have a combined expertise in marketing, translation and digital creation that uniquely put them in the position to help those businesses overcome these barriers. They also apply start-up methodology towards a traditional, professional services industry, which allows them to hire the most suitable talent; scale processes and ultimately keeps their service costs effective and flexible.
Within the first six months of operating, Ran and Zhang positioned China Ambition as an expert and influencer in the Australia-China trade areas, especially in regards to innovation in the eyes of Austrade and DFAT. They also doubled their revenue every month, and staffed nine people in three countries.
This success won them a prestigious $30,000 grant and recognition from the Australian-China Council last April. The grant was used to run an inaugural innovation exchange program between Chengdu, China and Australia, which helped open a new channel between both country’s collaboration.
As an entrepreneur, Ran is motivated by the drive to make an impact and create value in the world, along with a desire to shatter negative stereotypes around gender, race and culture, to ensure that Australia remains relevant and successful in Asia.
