Formulating success: How ATP Science turned itself into an international vitamin and sport supplement company

The business idea started in a coffee shop when a married couple decided to meet with their scientist friend. In 2010, Jeff Doidge and wife Toni, partnered with respected scientist, Matt Legge to develop a sports supplement range based on science and successful trials. Fast forward 10 years and ATP Science is one of Australia’s fastest growing health and supplement companies.

ATP Science, an industry leader in science-based health, sports and nutrition supplements, just secured a partnership with the world’s most visited fitness website, Bodybuilding.com.

Bodybuilding.com is the number one online sports nutrition retailer globally and the deal for ATP is worth millions.

The BodyBuilding.com partnership took several years to negotiate and ATP Science’s Managing Director, Jeff Doidge, said it was worth the wait.

“We are incredibly happy with this partnership,” Mr Doidge said.

“I started my first business in the fitness industry 20 years ago and I have been a big fan of BB.com. Since starting ATP Science, it has always been a dream of mine to work with them. BB.com is the true pioneer of the online health and performance industry. It is second to none.

“ATP Science’s growth over the last couple of years has allowed us to negotiate this deal. We are so happy we can stock our products and contribute our health and wellness ideas with a reputable American company and service, not just with our American customers but consumers globally.”

Why has ATP Science attracted this partnership?

For two consecutive years, ATP Science has been named among Australia’s fastest growing companies. ATP Science was listed in the prestigious Australian Financial Review Fast 100 list in both 2018 and 2019. The AFR Fast 100 recognises fast growing, entrepreneurial companies that are making a significant contribution to the Australian economy and supporting and creating local jobs.

ATP Science’s Directors have placed significant emphasis on achieving this award two years running as the company looks to expand both nationally and internationally, despite pressures from COVID-19 and regulatory changes in Australia.

ATP Science co-founder, Toni Doidge, said that maintaining integrity throughout the expansion will always be important.

“When we first decided to start formulating new products, we wanted to make products that work and people talk about. We want to always maintain that integrity throughout the entire process,” Mrs Doidge said.

“Our products are our most important assets. We spare no expense on creating the best products we can make; from the brilliant mind of our co-founder Matt Legge, through to procurement protocols that are second to none, and our conscientious and talented manufacturing team.

“We do everything we can to add value along each and every step of our product development. That way we know we produce products that genuinely help people,” Mrs Doidge said.

New business expansion plans

Due to increased demand in sports supplements and nutrition products, ATP Science quickly outgrew its manufacturing facility in Loganholme, Queensland. ATP Science’s Directors decided to take the plunge and build a new $15million facility, due to open mid-2020.

It will be a TGA-approved manufacturing facility located in Meadowbrook, Queensland.

ATP Science’s Head Scientist, Matt Legge said the facility will allow ATP Science to manufacture more goods onshore, meaning more jobs will be created.

“Not only will this new facility allow us to manufacture more products, it will double the number of staff we employ and it’s two and a half times the size of our current facility,” Mr Legge said.

“Allowing us to keep manufacturing onshore and having control over the quality of our products has always been important to us and building this facility is allowing us to do just that.”

As well as a new facility, new products, new international stockists and new business partners are all on the agenda for ATP Science for the second half of 2020.

ATP Science’s annual turnover is $25million. It has more than 20 products, including AUST-L products. ATP Science’s podcast, The ATP Project, ranks consistently in the top two in the world on iTunes, with more than 250,000 listeners every month.
