What is 30under30?
30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. This year saw a surplus of highly qualified entrants, so we thought we would highlight some of the bright and innovative nominees who just missed the Top 30 by a wink. Though only 26, Carl Taylor has spent a decade acquiring and selling businesses.
His first, at 18, sold for a measly $600 — a tenth of its actual worth, he says. From that teachable moment, Taylor began to explore how to maximise business value and negotiate favourable prices.
The mentor, author and public speaker has turned the venture into “How to Buy a Business for $1,” an event through his newest initiative, Business Builders Academy.
Taylor himself acquired a cafe asking for $30,000 for a buck in 2011, and recently purchased another cafe on the market after talking down the seller to a quarter of the asking price.
Yet rather than bask in his mystique, he’s reaching out to make his achievement more accessible to frustrated and timid business owners.
Says Taylor, “The more we can educate emerging entrepreneurs, lead by example and continue to build businesses, the more influence we as a community can have.”
