James Packer, son of Kerry Packer, grandson of Sir Frank Packer.
He has taken the family fortune and added to it. Significantly.
He’s ditched the media empire built by his father and grandfather in favour of casinos.
And, to promote his latest casino in Manilla, he’s created, what is possibly the most expensive ad ever made.
It’s rumoured to have cost $70 million, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro both asking about $15 million a piece to appear.
Did I mention it’s directed by Martin Scorsese?
Who will be surprised if George Clooney and Matt Damon appear at some point, reprising their Ocean’s Eleven (Twelve and Thirteen) type characters? As this ad is titled “The Audition”, we know there’s got to be more coming.
But, given Packer and his business partners have invested around $1.2 billion in three casinos in Manilla, dropping $70 million on an ad seems like chump change. The one featured in this ad is known as the ‘City of Dreams’.
The question begs to be asked: Does a casino really need to be advertised?
