What is 30under30?

30under30 is an Anthill initiative launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. This year saw a surplus of highly qualified entrants, so we thought we would highlight some of the bright and innovative nominees who just missed the Top 30 by a wink. Behold, our 2012 30under30 Honourable Mentions! More.

Darcy Naunton, VIC (b. 1983)

Name: Darcy Naunton
Age: 29 (Born: June 1983)
Gender: Male
State: VIC
Known for: Adventure Capital Venture Management

One of Melbourne’s oldest industrial landmarks, the York Butter Factory once again hums with activity, as a co-working space for entrepreneurs, thanks to Darcy Naunton.

It’s part of a larger effort by Naunton’s firm, Adventure Capital, to transform the city into a miniature Silicon Valley. YBF currently hosts over 40 startups, and as managing director, Naunton has a guiding hand in many.

Adventure Capital’s investment portfolio thus far includes seven startups of its own.

The firm also hosts periodic events, including Startup Weekend Melbourne, Silicon Beach Drinks and the angel network Aurelius Digital.

Literally a born entrepreneur (his great-grandfather invented the napkin dispenser), Naunton credits a chance meeting in Argentina with his future partner, Stuart Richardson, for setting the business wheels in motion.

Of Adventure Capital’s mission, he says, “We believe in being lean, focused and hungry in order to achieve the results we have, and expect the same of the companies we mentor and invest in.”

Anthill asks: Darcy Naunton, what motivates you as an entrepreneur?

To make a difference and to create a business (or empire) that I am proud to call my own. My drive is internal and not strictly wealth-driven. For me, it’s about creating a legacy that generations down the family line will know my story and what I accomplished.
