Creature Kit for Insect Life Cycles

This innovation initially came to life when…

This innovation initially came to life when I was working on my butterfly and insect farm. I wanted people to be able to experience various insect life cycles in their own home or at school, so that I could share something special with them. I chose a few of my favourites and came up with a prototype for an enclosure that would meet the housing requirements for all of them. There were a few requirements that I followed: it must be easily portable, easy to view the insects and provide the insect with a great living space.

WHAT & HOW

The purpose of this innovation is to…

…allow people to experience various insect life cycles in their own homes. I have a passion for insects and wanted to be able to share this in a way that’s fun and interactive.

It does this by…

…providing a suitable environment for the insects to grow and change and it also allows great viewing access. The kit also comes with an insect of your choice (which you order directly from our farm with your mail order code). There are currently six different insects to choose from in the kit.

PURPOSE & BENEFITS

This innovation improves on what came before because…

the kit is completely portable and it is suitable for sale in retail outlets. The insects are ordered directly from our farm so we can go through the care requirements of each insect before the customer makes their choice. This way the customer can have the best experience possible.

Its various benefits to the customer/end-user include…

…a light and portable enclosure, that folds flat when not in use. Constant support while choosing their insect as well as support during the life cycle process.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

In the past, this problem was solved by…

In the past, there have not been life cycle kits specifically made for insects in Australia.

Its predecessors/competitors include…

Previously school children were growing silkworms in shoe boxes. Our kit has two clear observation windows to allow viewing without disturbing the insects. Insects in our range include ladybugs, antlions, lacewings, butterflies, beetles and stick insects.

TARGET MARKET

It is made for…

…people that love to know how the world works. The kits have been popular with schools, day care centres and children in general.

DISTRIBUTION STRATEGY

It is available for sale through…

…various online stores, and retails shops throughout Australia. These range from educational and gift stores to pet shops.

Our marketing strategy is to…

…inform customers about our Creature Kit any way possible. This includes paid advertising in educational publications, free internet advertising, providing samples for bloggers and free advertising through various media outlets (through press releases).
