1. THE BEGINNING

This innovation came to life when…

When John Kelly, founder of Atomo, watched his 2-year-old daughter receive multiple bruises from a blood collection procedure, it set him on a path that would forever change the way blood is collected and tested.

John Kelly teamed up with another engineer, Richard Sokolov of IDE, to find a solution to the worldwide problem of fast, accurate blood testing away from a laboratory. The team developed the AtomoRapid platform, a revolutionary way to perform in-field blood tests, and has put to market our HIV test on the platform first.

2. WHAT & HOW

The purpose of this innovation is to…

AtomoRapid HIV detects both HIV 1&2 infections in human whole blood, serum or plasma. It enables health care workers and individuals to gain access to effective and reliable testing resulting in earlier diagnosis and improved patient outcomes.

It does this by…

AtomoRapid HIV is the world’s first integrated, rapid HIV test. It replaces the current ‘bits-in-a-box’ testing kits with one device. This all-in-one device is easy to use and accurate making it more reliable and safer in the diagnosis of HIV. AtomoRapid HIV uses a WHO pre-qualified HIV test strip.

3. PURPOSE & BENEFITS

This innovation improves on what came before because…

Current generation test kits are cumbersome and difficult to use, resulting in procedural errors in the field that drastically impact on the efficacy of the test results. AtomoRapid HIV has engineered out these errors and revolutionised rapid testing through empowering healthcare workers and patients.

AtomoRapid won the Bradfield Award 2012 from Engineers Australia for Engineering Excellence.

Its various benefits to the customer/end-user include…

It is easy to use, making the testing process efficient and simple.

It is all-in-one, eliminating many common in-field errors with the current ‘bits-in-a-box’ kits.

It is accurate and reliable with test results available in minutes.

4. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

In the past, this problem was solved by…

Previously, competitors failed to address in-field errors as the R&D teams were focused on improving the biological makeup of the test, rather than focusing on usability. This included utilising different samples such a saliva in place of human whole blood.

Its predecessors/competitors include…

A competitor to AtomoRapid HIV is Oraquick HIV1/2, a saliva based HIV test that does not require a fingerstick. Even with this innovation, the test remains complex to use.

5. TARGET MARKET

It is made for…

It has been designed for both Professional Use and self-test markets.

Core Professional users of this product include Wellness Screening companies, large Corporate medical programmes, NGOs running testing facilities and health & life insurers. It is ideal for in-the-field use in resource-limited settings.

In addition, given its simplicity, it is ideally placed for self-test use and is currently being evaluated by several research organisations for this purpose, to ensure that we establish a best practice around supporting a self-test user.

It is available for sale through…

It is currently available for sale in Africa through our branch office and we are rolling it out on the continent. We have engaged with the Australian TGA about introducing it in Australia, with discussions underway.

Our marketing strategy is to…

We have a dedicated sales team working in Africa to promote the product. Atomo has engaged with numerous key opinion leaders in the field and is working with them to introduce the product. In addition Atomo attends numerous conferences worldwide throughout the year including the upcoming International Aids Conference in July 2014.
