1. THE BEGINNING

This innovation came to life when…

In 2009, Yohan needed an economics tutor. He got in touch with Rowan (not because of his credentials, but his haircut – a mohawk). The two became friends over a passion for education and technology.

Fast forward to 2012, acting on this passion they built a Khan Academy equivalent for Australia (video tutorials/quizzes delivered in a game-based online environment for high school students) which was used by thousands of students.

Unfortunately it only plugged the gaps for students when it was too late (just before their exams) and from speaking with teachers, they believed it could do so much more…

2. WHAT & HOW

The purpose of this innovation is to…

Enable teachers to remove a one-size-fits-all approach in their classroom so they can easily create and deliver engaging individual learning pathways for specific students to ensure each student gets exactly what they need, when they need it.

It does this by…

Enabling a teacher to quickly in less than 5 minutes organise (drag & drop) their existing teaching materials into a game based learning pathway and then in less than 30 seconds allocate it to individuals or groups of students, providing a teacher with access to real time data on student performance to identify how to best help each student.

3. PURPOSE & BENEFITS

This innovation improves on what came before because…

Currently it’s incredibly time consuming for a teacher to prepare a single lesson plan for a single class. This means it’s near impossible for teachers to consider creating individual plans for specific students.

The result is a one-size-fits-all classroom, which despite teachers best intentions result in students leaving with gaps in their understanding.

Its various benefits to the customer/end-user include…

Teachers quickly build and tailor lessons to meet specific students’ needs and access real-time data on student progression to identify who/where they need help. Students enjoy engaging game based learning experiences, personalised to their needs, on any device.

4. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

In the past, this problem was solved by…

Delivering a one-size-fits-all approach in classrooms. This would either involve a teacher at the front lecturing a whole class, or by sharing a series of resources (death by hyperlink) to a whole class via a LMS so every student essentially accessed the same learning regardless of where they were at and what they needed.

Its predecessors/competitors include…

Learning management systems like Moodle and Blackboard, as well as social learning tools like Edmodo. These tools are great as content repositories or for collaboration, but deliver the same content to all students regardless of individual student needs.

5. TARGET MARKET

It is made for…

Teachers and students in schools from K-12. With the shift in schools to BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) where students each have their own devices, teachers and students need an easy to use software to complement their hardware devices.

myEd partners with schools rolling out BYOD and 1 to 1 device programs to make it possible for schools and teachers to personalise the learning for each student on their own device, while enabling students to access engaging game based learning anytime, anywhere.

It is available for sale through…

Invite only – we open to the public in June 2014. If you are a teacher and are interested in trialing myEd in your classroom get in touch with us here or email us at [email protected].

Our marketing strategy is to…

Work closely with innovative teachers from across Australia. The education sector is strongly driven by WOM recommendations so our focus has been to co-develop this product with teachers and schools so they have a strong sense of ownership in the outcome and spread the word within their own networks. That and free access for individual teachers, conference and content marketing.
