If you’re a James Bond villain, you’ll know that nothing is more ‘cutting edge’ than laser tech. (Say it with me, ‘Laaaay-zer.’)
In 2014, The Laser Co founders, Liz and Oni, both craving creative output outside of work, decided to scratch an itch.
Starting very niche, using a friend’s laser cutting machine, the pair saw an opportunity to design and make small products to generate an income online. They started developing laser-cut signage and showing off the results on Etsy.
Quickly, they realised that they had bigger ambitions, and could build something more substantial. That’s when they switched gears and moved from selling their laser-made creations on Etsy to launching their own laser workshop.
The company provides a refreshingly easy way to create, prototype and iterate on design ideas. Before this technology was widely available, everything was done by hand. Until The Laser Co came along, similar services were confusing, unapproachable and offered a ‘no-frills’ approach (i.e. Unremarkable and boring.)
Liz and Oni’s design experience put them in a unique position to oversee every laser design project from the perspective of a designer, and the results are better for it.
So, what’s it like inside this cool organisation?
“We work in an amazing space with fantastic clients and workmates who love coming to work. I don’t think there’s more you can ask for,” Liz recently told Anthill Online.
“When we asked a staff member if she’s content, she replied ‘I don’t think you understand. When I talk to my friends I have to hide how much I love my job and pretend it’s a bit crap like everyone else’s job. I love it here!”
When asked what else makes her company worthy of the ultimate ‘cool’ status in this years Cool Company Awards, Liz added:
“Also, I think the fact that two women have built this great business in a heavily male-dominated space is pretty cool. Did I mention we work with lasers?”
