Anthony Lieu

“Hungry.” This is the word Anthony Lieu chose to describe his business, Beyond Law.

Beyond Law is a job search website that aims to present law students or graduates with a wide variety of career opportunities. The site features listings including non-profits, international internships, rural practices and more.

Anthony’s inspiration came from a personal experience, he says. “I was frustrated at law school about lack of information about career opportunities, particularly outside commercial law. I found that my experience was not unique.”

In 2013 Anthony created Beyond Law, and within a year, it was the leading job search site for law students and graduates. Today, the site receives visits from over 12,500 people per month.

Proud to be able to make a positive impact on job seekers who may have otherwise not known about the range of opportunities available to them, Anthony has been thrilled to see how Beyond Law continues to grow.

Aside from Beyond Law, Anthony also works as head of marketing at a legal tech startup, LegalVision. Here, Anthony leads a growing team and uses his leadership roles at both businesses to “further innovation and thought leadership in the legal tech industry in Australia.”

When he was offered this position, Anthony also had a graduate job lined up at a Big 4 accounting firm. Despite being strongly advised to take the accounting opportunity, Anthony chose LegalVision because he felt the company was “disrupting the legal industry for the better.”

When asked how he has built buzz around his two business, Anthony says it’s all about content. “Content is king,” he says emphasizing Australians are consuming more content now than ever.

In overseeing Legal Visions’ content strategy, Anthony has been a part of publishing nearly 3,000 free articles and 40 legal documents, he says. At his own startup, Beyond Law, he makes sure the site’s free resources are exceptionally engaging and that job seekers have a platform to share their stories and experiences.

“Marketing is no longer about the stuff that you sell, but about the stories you can tell,” Anthony says.

When it comes to balancing two jobs, Anthony says at first it seemed to be a daunting task and major obstacle, but soon he saw the silver lining. “I learnt to prioritize my time, work more productively and hustle ridiculously hard,” he says.

It’s extremely helpful that his two jobs are able to coincide, he says. LegalVision supports Beyond Law and has even used it as a recruiting tool. By working to make it so both of his endeavors could collaborate, Anthony exemplifies an untraditional use of the word innovation.
