1. THE BEGINNING

This innovation came to life when…

We realised that the growth in the Resources industry was placing enormous pressure on the aeromedical evacuation service in WA. Oil and Gas employees increased from 3,200 in 2009 to 17,860 in 2013 thanks primarily to new construction and production programs on the North West Shelf of WA.

Being able to accurately plan in advance for the volume of medical needs, aviation assets, infrastructure and equipment would become an essential ingredient in ensuring continued improvement to patient outcomes including patient survival.

We contracted the University of Adelaide’s Mathematical Modelling team to develop a software: Predictive Modelling Decision-Making Tool.

2. WHAT & HOW

The purpose of this innovation is to…

The purpose of this innovation is to accurately plan in advance for the volume of medical needs, aviation assets, infrastructure and equipment required by Australia’s Oil and Gas industry to ensure continued improvement to patient outcomes and in some cases, patient survival.

It does this by…

It does this by assessing at what point there might be insufficient aviation and medical assets, air crew, medical crew etc. to meet a patient requirement for evacuation and therefore impact on the patient’s health. The modelling software analyses a large range of operational and environmental variable factors to assist in predicting the requirement for us to increase our aviation and medical asset pool.

3. PURPOSE & BENEFITS

This innovation improves on what came before because…

When the aeromedical contract in WA first started in 2009, we averaged one or two evacuations per month. Now they are as high as five per week. The introduction of the software modelling tool has been paramount to our ability to convey our requirements to increase our asset pool such that patient outcomes are not compromised or the service fails.

Its various benefits to the customer/end-user include…

The modelling tool gives Oil and Gas companies and their workers a high degree of confidence that their medical needs, especially emergency medical attention and evacuation to the nearest hospital emergency department are met without compromise.

4. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

In the past, this problem was solved by…

In the past, this problem was solved by guesswork. There are no predecessors. The initial contract to provide aeromedical evacuation services in WA was the result of an unsolicited proposal which has since grown into a world-class service. The complexity of the operating environment drove us to ensure that risk of event failures was mitigated to the fullest extent possible, and that 100% service was maintained.

Its predecessors/competitors include…

Many other predictive modelling tools have been developed over the years, but nothing specific to this type of complex contract working for eight Oil and Gas companies. This tool is purpose-built and specific to this challenging environment.

5. TARGET MARKET

It is made for…

It is made for the entire Oil and Gas industry worldwide. Aspen Medical has set out to achieve a worldwide “best in class” aeromedical evacuation (AME) service that provides end-to-end care for its patients without compromise to aviation or medical safety, and the availability of the service on a 24/7 basis. Our innovative modelling tool is at the heart of that offering.

It is available for sale through…

Aspen Medical’s Business Development team.

Our marketing strategy is to…

Our marketing strategy is to leverage of the eight multinational Oil & Gas companies to whom we supply the AME service powered by the modelling tool. They have operations across the planet and their satisfaction with the service as powered by the innovative modelling techniques will ensure the adoption of our service and model across their operations wherever they may be.
